Grace Kind

Hi, I'm Grace, welcome to my site!

Here are a few things I'm interested in right now:

  1. Ideonomy

The life and work of Patrick Gunkel. He was a futurist at MIT who dedicated his life to formulating a "science of ideas". This news clipping is a good introduction: Patrick Gunkel Is An Idea Man Who Thinks in Lists. (I am planning on re-hosting much of the content from his website for posterity, although it seems well-preserved from MIT at this time). Try to take it seriously and see what resonates with you. Related: my explanation of properties and dimensions in Ideonomy and negation in Ideonomy.

  1. Cyborgism

An internet subculture primarily dedicated to research on Large Language Model behavior. They are loosely centered around Janus, who created a theoretical framework of large language models called Simulator Theory. A lot of their content is esoteric and somewhat difficult to sort through, but as with Gunkel, it is interesting and useful if you're willing to invest some time.

  1. Machine Behavior and Human-AI Interaction

Machine Behavior is the study of the behavior of intelligent machines (this includes much of the research output of Cyborgism but covers other areas as well). Human-AI Interaction is the study of relationships between humans and AI systems. Related: my list of novel uses for LLMs and advantages of AI therapists.

  1. AI Alignment

I'm broadly interested in the alignment problem - how to build powerful AI safely. I'm interested in this because it seems important, and also because it seems difficult and therefore fun to work on. A good starting point for understanding prior work in this area can be found on the AI Alignment Forum. However, I will also note that this forum is tightly coupled with the Rationalist and Effective Altruist movements, both of which have a fair share of closet-skeletons.
