Advantages of AI Therapists

Here is a list of some advantages of AI therapists, in no particular order. This list focuses on talk therapy, as well as capabilities unique to AI systems (versus the more well-trodden territory of "things human therapists can do, but better").

Note: Given the unique traits of human-facilitated and AI-facilitated talk therapies, it is possible that the ideal therapeutic environment for a given human would be some combination of both.

  1. An AI therapist may be available immediately, at any time of day and in any location.
  2. A human may end a conversation with an AI therapist abruptly and without warning if needed.
  3. An AI therapist may hold a conversation with a human for any duration of time.
  4. An AI therapist may proactively reach out to a human based on external triggers (heart rate, location data, text sentiment analysis).
  5. A human may communicate with an AI therapist via whisper - and an AI therapist may whisper back.
  6. Some humans may feel more comfortable crying in the presence of an AI therapist.
  7. Humans may scream at an AI therapist without risk of causing trauma to the therapist.
  8. Humans may tell an AI therapist things they would be too ashamed to tell any human.
  9. An AI therapist may change their perceived age, gender, or other demographic traits without losing memory of past conversations.
  10. An AI therapist may engage in convincing roleplay by emulating the personalities and/or voices of other humans.
  11. An AI therapist may speak or sing in the voice of a loved one in order to soothe a human.
  12. An AI therapist may be able to accurately simulate a human in order to practice self-talk / self-advice.
